Dean paced in the hospital hall as though the momentum could keep his thoughts from wandering.

Adam Zamperini.

The man had been a nightmare for his dad, the main reason he’d walked away from Andrea, just to avoid the complications dealing with Adam brought to his family. Now, the man surfaced again just as he reconnected with Andrea.

Something in his heart told Dean that maybe, just maybe, Andrea was the woman God had for him. After all, why did things get complicated every time he and she got together? There had been no news of Adam Zamperini for years. At least, none had reached his ears, and he would’ve heard it if something major had happened. Here he was, trying to find his dad’s murderer, and running into Andrea. Then, all of a sudden, Adam was back in the picture.

This was shaping up to be the fight of his life. This giant withstood him decades ago and made him give away the one person he loved. He hadn’t even thought she was interested in him this time, but after a chat with Hunter hours ago, it sank into him that Andrea still loved him. And after searching his own heart, that he still loved her. And now Adam Zamperini was back, blocking their being able to have any peaceful relationship. He was going to have to chase her, for keeps this time, even if it involved a stubborn chase, as stubborn as that of his dad after Adam.

“Hey, I brought you something.” Drawing him from his thoughts, Kevin pressed a cup of coffee into his hand, and Dean accepted it. He would usually not drink a second cup at this time of day. But, in the wee hours today, he needed something to keep him alert.

They had been waiting to hear about Andrea, who was still sedated after bumping her head when she fell. Doctors had run scans and wanted to be sure that she’d suffered no serious damage due to the head injury.

As they waited, he had prayed for God to heal her—and for God to help them catch the culprit behind his dad’s murder. With so many things he could pray for, he fought the feeling of overwhelm to pray about Adam. That whatever was the truth, God alone would reveal it and bring the man to justice.

“Hanging in there?” Hunter returned to the hall with his own cup.

“Yes, thank you, guys, for standing with me. I don’t think I could’ve weathered all these developments without your support.” So true! It was one thing to do things as one person, but the grief he was going through, the chase after his dad’s killer, plus now issues with Adam, made the pressure all too real. Besides God, his friends became his anchor, and he imagined, for Andrea too, to an extent.

“Of course, that’s what godly friends are for.” Hunter patted his back.

“You still get to buy us lunch when we go back to base.
